The Druid Heights Community Development Corp. Inc. is moving forward with plans to build a new restaurant, museum, business incubator and music school on Pennsylvania Avenue in Baltimore.

Construction on the $8.4 million project, at the site of the historic Sphinx Club, will begin in July, said Roscoe Johnson III, the real estate development director for the Druid Heights CDC. Commercial Construction is the general contractor.

Johnson said he is still finalizing contracts with vendors for the restaurant and museum.

The restaurant, located in the Sphinx Club’s footprint, will provide a venue for healthy food, available for dine-in or carry-out customers, Johnson said. It will also include a small entertainment space for local artists.

Originally, the museum was planned as a Negro League baseball museum, but Johnson said instead it will highlight the history of Pennsylvania Avenue — a hub for black entertainers during the first half of the 20th century.

The new development is one of several initiatives to spur more commercial activity on “The Avenue.” The city completed a renovation of the Avenue Market in November that brought in 10 additional vendors.
